The mock French seam is another easy way to create a clean finish on your seams for light to medium weight fabrics. It encases the raw edge in the same way that a French seam does, but the sewing technique is slightly different. The ‘mock’ french seam finish can be used on curves, unlike the traditional French seam.
Step 1: Pin the RIGHT sides of your fabric together.
Step 2: Stitch together using the seam allowance specified on the pattern.
STEP 3: Press open the seam allowance.
STEP 4: Press one side of the seam allowance in half so that the raw edge meets the center of the seam.
STEP 5: Press the other side of the seam allowance in half so the raw edge meets the center of the seam.
STEP 6: Bring both of the folded edges together and press.
STEP 7: Edge stitch 1/8″ of from the folded edge.
STEP 8: The raw edges are encased inside the folded seams for a neat finish.
This is how the finished seam will look below.
Happy Sewing!!
WOW Alice this was a brilliant idea – great seam for an unlined jacket!
Yes it is Kathleen. Both the French Seam and the Mock French Seam are great for finishing the inside of your garments.
Works on curves, huh? Even something like a sleeve curve?
I wish you would have shown how it was done on an actual curve.
Thanks for the instructions! I suppose this is great if you don’t have enough for the seam allowance for a true french seam as well.
